THE CASE:

A 75-year-old man came to us barely able to breathe. His Ejection Fraction was 25% (normal is 55-70%), his aortic valve was severely blocked, AND he had multiple clogged arteries feeding his heart. A triple threat.

WHAT HE NEEDED:

• Open the blocked arteries (stents)
• Replace the failing valve (TAVI)
• But his weak heart made both procedures extremely risky

OUR PLAN:

Enter the Impella – a tiny mechanical pump (thinner than a pencil!) inserted through the leg that travels to the heart. Think of it as a backup generator that keeps your house running while electricians fix the main power system.

WHAT WE DID:

With Impella supporting his heart, we performed BOTH procedures in ONE session:

• Opened all blocked arteries with stents
• Replaced the tight valve (no open-heart surgery!)
• Here's the incredible part: During the procedure, his heart stopped beating for 2 minutes - exactly as we anticipated. With proper planning, the Impella took over completely, pumping blood and keeping him alive while we worked. This is what the device was designed to do!
• Successfully completed everything in a single procedure

THE RESULT:

He went home breathing easy, walking without difficulty, and feeling better than he had in months.
